What does each jar really cost?
Most makers price from the ingredients alone and forget the jar, the lid, the label and their own hours. Put it all in and see the price that holds your margin.
$6.72Cost per jar

$14.94Price for a 55% margin
How the number is built
Cost per jar = (ingredients + packaging for every jar + your time at your hourly rate) divided by the jars in the batch. Price for a margin = cost per jar divided by (1 minus the margin). A 55% margin on a $5.00 jar means selling at $11.11.
Doing this for one recipe is easy. Keeping it right across ten recipes when flour or fruit changes price is the part that eats a weekend. That is what we plan to build next.
